Original Gift Ideas for Your Dinner Host

You're looking forward to dinner at a friend's house. It's always nice to relax and enjoy someone else's cooking. Just make sure you don't show up empty-handed. Bringing a gift for your host is a tradition in many cultures, but these gifts can be as diverse and original as the people preparing your meal. Here are just a few thoughts on how you can show your appreciation for their hard work.

Think outside of the box. Consider presenting your host with something unique, like a nice packet of exotic spices or marinades. Any good cook can put these to use long after the dinner party. Plus, while some gifts are enjoyed for only one night, a range of quality spices will last for months to come, much like the stories from your memorable evening.

Farm-to-market items are always welcome. Something as simple as a dozen local eggs or a jar of seasonal jams from a local farmers' market will make any food lover happy. It's unexpected, thoughtful and you'll also be able to choose from plenty of options.

Kitchen tools, of course. There's a good chance your host loves to cook. Surprise him or her with a new kitchen utensil wrapped in a simple ribbon. Culinary tools are useful items that are also fun to receive.

Flowers make any occasion special. Bring a beautiful, seasonal bouquet, but go ahead and prearrange the flowers in a vase before you arrive. This way, you won't take your host away from the dinner preparations. A bouquet of flowers always makes your host feel appreciated.

Bring your passion, curiosity and gratitude. It's always a gift when you come ready to make the most of the evening. Make conversations count. Remember to listen as much as you talk, and don't be afraid to ask good questions. Easy, meaningful interactions among guests is always appreciated, not only by the host, but by everyone attending.
