Value to All

Working Toward a Healthier World

Last year, we recognized World Health Day by sharing information about the PCRM Nutrition Rainbow and how fresh cut salads can provide an array of valuable nutrients.

This year, we want to look at the stated principles of the World Health Organization and consider how we might promote health in our own families and communities.

World Health Day is celebrated every year on the week of April 7th, when the World Health Organization adopted its constitution back in 1946. (The same year that Saladmaster began!) The World Health Organization is founded around these guiding principles:

- Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.
- The enjoyment of the highest attainable standard of health is one of the fundamental rights of every human being without distinction of race, religion, political belief, economic or social condition.
- The health of all peoples is fundamental to the attainment of peace and security and is dependent on the fullest co-operation of individuals and States.
- The achievement of any State in the promotion and protection of health is of value to all.
- Unequal development in different countries in the promotion of health and control of diseases, especially communicable disease, is a common danger.
- Healthy development of the child is of basic importance; the ability to live harmoniously in a changing total environment is essential to such development.
- The extension to all peoples of the benefits of medical, psychological and related knowledge is essential to the fullest attainment of health.
- Informed opinion and active co-operation on the part of the public are of the utmost importance in the improvement of the health of the people.
- Governments have a responsibility for the health of their peoples, which can be fulfilled only by the provision of adequate health and social measures.

How do we address health issues in our community?

Assessing the problems

Some health issues are universal, while others are specific to particular regions of the world. It may be access to physicians or to life-saving medicine and vaccines. It could be the availability of potable water. The major problem for another community could be obesity related from a lack of healthy foods or education about how to prepare them.

To take on big issues requires us to identify the problems and educate ourselves on possible solutions. It’s important to be aware of what’s happening around us, and take these challenges seriously.

Support health-focused organizations

For example, last year, Saladmaster became a new national sponsor of the American Diabetes Association’s Together We Can Stop Diabetes® movement. The ADA is the leading resource for the more than 100 million Americans living with diabetes and prediabetes, and the thousands of health professionals who guide their care. It is an opportunity for Saladmaster to be part of something truly meaningful: the ADA’s mission to prevent and cure diabetes, and to improve the lives of all people affected by diabetes.

Their advocacy and outreach with their research and leadership was one of the main reasons Saladmaster selected to sponsor the ADA. But there are many organizations that support a variety of health-related issues. Any one of them would be happy to have your support.

Start with yourself

At Saladmaster, our mission is use cooking to help people eat better, live better, and achieve the life they desire. The mission is fundamentally an issue of health in the fullest sense of the word as outlined by the World Health Organization (“complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity”).

Our Saladmaster Life Changers have dedicated themselves to healthier living. Some have even studied wellness and nutrition. They’ve built their business around educating people on health-related issues, as well as selling our cookware. We believe we can inspire the kind of cooking that makes life better.

With the summer holidays upon us it can be tricky thinking of activities to keep the kids entertained.

Cooking is a perfect activity that also helps children learn and develop new skills that will stay with them.  Whether you are baking, cooking breakfast or making dinner, encouraging them to get involved and teaching them how to do it can be a lot of fun and a great way to spend time with your kids this summer.
