Why You Should Give Your Dad a Rose for Father’s Day

Making Memories with Dad on this Holiday

“When I come home, my daughter will run to the door and give me a big hug, and everything that’s happened that day just melts away.” – Hugh Jackman

This Sunday, we’re celebrating Father’s Day. It’s that special time of the year when we acknowledge the fathers and father-figures in our lives—those people who have made a meaningful impact with their wisdom, their love, and of course, their “dad humor.”

At Saladmaster, we’re all about families and the family experience. Everything we do is designed to change lives and create memorable experiences around the dinner table—building authentic relationships, having fun together, and helping others fulfill their dreams.

For this Father’s Day, we want to look at how it got started, and what you can do to let your dad know how special he is to you.

A Brief History

Father’s Day turns 100 years old this year. It started in 1909, when Sonora Smart Dodd sat in church listening to a Mother's Day sermon. She wanted to celebrate her dad, William Jackson Smart. (This is why daughters are so wonderful.) Sonora’s mother had died when she was young, and her father raised her by himself—in addition to his five other children.

During the first Father’s Day, Sonora gave roses to everyone at church and encouraged them to wear them in honor of their dads—red for the living and white in memory of those who passed.

In 1938, Father’s Day gained more popularity when the National Council for the Promotion of Father's Day (yes, a real organization) was formed in New York City by a group of men's clothing retailers. Not a bad move, when you consider how many ties are sold on Father’s Day.

Celebrating Father’s Day Today

Nowadays, there isn’t one way to celebrate Father’s Day. Mostly, we cater the day to whatever Dad wants. If he wants to watch his favorite movie, we watch it. If he wants to watch a baseball game, we load up the van and drive to the ballpark. If it’s cooking a delicious meal, we break out the Saladmaster cookware! Although, who wouldn’t want a rose?

But of course, what would Father’s Day be without some handcrafted presents from the kids? Maybe fold him an origami shirt?
