If you've ever wondered about what's in your cookware, then you're not alone. Now more than ever, consumers are concerned about food ingredients and the materials in the cookware they use.

As a global leader in cookware innovation, we at Saladmaster take pride in the investments made for the research of materials used in the development of our products. Throughout our 70+ year history, Saladmaster is a company that many like to compare their products with, or create confusion regarding the materials used in Saladmaster products. believe in sharing the known facts that support the "Why" behind our products to clear any misconceptions.

Saladmaster invests millions of dollars in research and advanced technology to bring innovative products to market that are engineered and designed with purpose, and for a lifetime of use. Let's take a look at what's happened over the past few decades.

Introducing Saladmaster 316 Stainless Steel Cookware

In 1994, Saladmaster introduced the world to the first and only cookware company using 316 Stainless Steel on the interior surface of our cookware. We chose 316 Stainless Steel due to its corrosion resistance properties, particularly against chlorides and other industrial solvents. Due to its non-reactive qualities, 316 Stainless Steel is also used in the manufacture of medical surgical instruments and bodily implants, in the dairy, food and beverage industries and meets the 3-A worldwide sanitary standards, all of which are highly important to Saladmaster and our food preparation system.

316 Stainless Steel Applications

But really, other than 316 cookware, what else is 316 Stainless Steel used for?

Did you know that a large volume of stainless steel produced today (especially 316 stainless steel) can be found in products related to the food and beverage industries? Stainless steel is commonly found in commercial kitchens and food processing plants because:

  • It can withstand shock and abrasive conditions found in kitchens or food processing plants.
  • It can be easily cleaned, and can withstand repeated washing with the many chemicals and detergents employed to meet public health demands.
  • It does not react to the alkalis and acids found in milk, cooked foods, vegetables, and food additives.

While 316 Stainless Steel is the reason why Saladmaster cookware performs exceptionally well, there's nothing stopping us from stepping it up to a higher level.

In 2008, Saladmaster ushered in another breakthrough in the cookware industry with the introduction to Saladmaster 316Ti stainless steel cookware. But what makes 316Ti Stainless Steel better than the rest?

Time to dig into the science behind the cookware, so get ready to learn more in the next few paragraphs!

The 316Ti Stainless Steel Advantage

Type 316Ti is a titanium stabilized variation of alloy 316. This austenitic chromium-nickel stainless steel contains molybdenum which increases the corrosion resistance, improves resistance to pitting chloride ion solutions and provides increased strength at elevated temperatures. Properties are similar to those of alloy 316 except that 316Ti can be used at elevated sensitization temperatures, due to its Titanium addition in the steel formation. So this means that when 316 stainless steel is reinforced with titanium, corrosion resistance is improved, particularly against sulfuric, hydrochloric, acetic, formic and tartaric acids, acid sulfates and alkaline chlorides.

316 stainless steel + Titanium = 316Ti

Long story short, home cooks around the world can rejoice with Saladmaster 316 Ti Cookware, also known as 316 Titanium cookware! The combined power of 316 Stainless Steel stabilized with Titanium protects the purity and flavor of foods better during the cooking process. But most importantly, because of 316Ti, Saladmaster cookware is not only made to last a lifetime, but also potentially durable enough to be shared with future generations to come.

316Ti Stainless Steel - To Salt or Not to Salt?

As a worldwide company, Saladmaster recognizes there are all types of spices and salts used during the cooking process. While we know that salt, a natural mineral, could pit all types of stainless steel if not used properly, the 316 and Titanium stainless steel combination provides added strength and hardness to help resist the affects salt could cause on the surface of the interior stainless steel. If you want to use salt during the cooking process, we recommend adding salt when the food or water is hot to allow the salt to break down quickly so it doesn't settle on the surface metal, or to add salt after food is prepared.

Bonded underneath the 316Ti stainless steel layer are three layers of aluminum which provides superior heat conduction to the steel. This interior thermal heat conducting core is sandwiched between the interior 316Ti Stainless Steel and outer 430 Stainless Steel, and does not leach through either the interior or exterior steel. The exterior 430 Stainless Steel provides a beautiful mirror finish, and with its magnetic properties, allows Saladmaster cookware to work on all stoves worldwide.

Nickel Content in Stainless Steel Cookware

Regarding any statements or concerns to nickel content in stainless steel, the following summarizes how the medical field recommends dealing with these "rare cases":

  • Medical / Surgical Stainless steel For surgical stainless steel, specific grades of Stainless steel - 316 and 316L are predominantly used. By alloying the elements Chromium, Nickel and Molybdenum Stainless steel offers the material scientist and surgeon some uniquely reliable qualities.

  • Chromium - heightens the materials scratch resistance and corrosion resistance - perfect for cleaning and sterilization.

  • Nickel - provides an extremely smooth and polished surface - fine details required for machining precision, high quality products etc. Nickel is also important for hygiene.

  • Molybdenum - provides hardness after forming and is great for sharp cutting edges - scalpel
Note - In some rare cases the body's immune system has been known to have an adverse reaction (both cutaneous and systematic) to the nickel content in some stainless steels. In cases like this, Titanium may be used as a substitute for Stainless Steel. However, with Titanium comes a more costly solution. Often, Stainless steel is used for temporary implants and the more expensive; titanium may be used for permanent implants.

Other Saladmaster Cookware Benefits

Another beauty to cooking with the Saladmaster system is that cooking time is decreased from traditional methods of cooking. Using Saladmaster's method of cooking usually cuts cooking time in half, saving energy and your time in the kitchen!
