Immune Boosters and Busters

As we shared in our update from the 7th April (Saladmaster Hopes You and Your Families Stay Healthy During these Unprecedented Times) there is no escaping the reality that all over the world we find ourselves in unprecedented times.

There is no doubt that we are becoming more focused on what we eat and how we can lead a healthier lifestyle, therefore we wanted to take the opportunity to share some more tips on how you can boost your immune.

Here are some ways you can boost your immune system with food:

 1. EAT ANTIOXIDANT RICH FOODS
Vitamin C - Oranges • Strawberries • Broccoli • Lemons • Red Peppers
Vitamin E - Spinach • Broccoli • Nuts • Seeds
Beta-C - Sweet Potatoes • Carrots • Mangoes • Pumpkin • Dark Leafy Greens

2. VITAMIN D
You can get Vitamin D in supplement form and in plant-based milks. Mushrooms are the only plant source of Vitamin D.

3. EAT ZINC-RICH FOODS
Great sources of zinc are nuts, pumpkin seeds, sesame seeds, beans and lentils

There are equally other ways you can support your immune system.

The immune system consists of white blood cells, the thymus, the spleen, lymph nodes, lymph channels and gut bacteria. It gives the body immunity from bacteria, viruses, parasites, and tumors.

As well as supporting your immune system by introducing the right foods into your diet, there are also other things you can do to help support your immune.

  • Sleep more

Sleep is one of the most important things for our bodies, as this is when our body heals and recovers!
On average adults need 7-9 hours, typically women need more than men.

  • Exercise at least 30 mins a day

The recommended amount of exercise is 30 minutes a day. Exercise can also release feel-good chemicals that help us sleep better, too!

  • Reduce sugar intake

Studies show the immune-suppressing effect of sugar starts less than 30 minutes after ingestion and may last up to 5 hours!

  • Reduce alcohol

When consumed in excess, alcohol can reduce the ability of white blood cells to kill germs! It can also suppress the ability of white blood cells to multiply ... these are the defenders of our body who fight disease, viruses, bacteria and other pathogens.

  • Caffeine

Too much  caffeine has  shown to  have immune suppressing  tendencies.

  • High fat diet

Too much fat can inhibit our white blood cells’ ability to multiply and produce antibodies.

  • Chemicals

Chemicals from the environment such as household chemicals, cookware and more can add toxins which inhibit the immune system.

  • Poor Gut Health

Due to a diet low in insoluble dietary fiber. The insoluble dietary fiber produce short-chain fatty acids, which can help prevent inflammation.
